About ADIA

ADIA administers the deposit insurance scheme. The agency secures deposits in banks and non-profit organizations in the territory of the Republic of Albania, which are the member subjects of the scheme. Their membership in the scheme is compulsory. ASD is a “paybox plus” model. The law “On deposit insurance”, as amended, also allows the Agency to participate by transferring financial means, of the compensation fund, during the extraordinary intervention in banks, in accordance with the provisions of the law “On recovery and extraordinary intervention in bank in the Republic of Albania”.

How is the compenstation amount calculated?

The amount of compensation is calculated and paid in Albanian lek (ALL).
When calculating the compensation amount for a depositor (including an individual, sole trader, or legal entity), the total of all deposits eligible for insurance under the law is taken into account, regardless of the currency in which they are held, in a bank or savings and credit association. This total includes accrued but unpaid interest as of the date of the insured event. From this amount, any outstanding obligations that the depositor owes to the financial institution placed under compulsory liquidation are deducted.
If a deposit eligible for compensation is held in a joint account, it is divided equally among the co-owners, unless otherwise specified in agreements or contracts between the parties.

Who pays for deposit insurance of bank depositors and/or sca that goes bankrupt?

Banks and SCA pay for the insurance of depositors’ deposits.

If the depositor has deposits in ALL and in foreign currency, how is the compensation made?

In case of compensation, deposits in foreign currency are converted into ALL, at the official exchange rate, on the day the bank or SCA is placed in forced liquidation.
